Mendon May Day— 1991
Mendon City Council Meeting— Steve Hatch informed the council that no one will help with May Day. He is still looking for help.
Mendon City Council Meeting— David Kotter reported that clean up day for Mendon will be April 20th, with April 27th being used as a back-up day. Steve Hatch reported on May Day. The dancers are taken care of but a chairman has not been found yet. Dennis Obray suggested, with reservations, of paying someone to chair the celebration. The council felt that this was the wrong direction to go.
Ward Bulletin Announcement: May Day— There will be a meeting next Sunday, March 24th, for mothers and daughters concerning the maypole dance, for May Day. The meeting will be immediately after Sacrament meeting in the children’s meeting room. This includes all girls in the first through fifth grades. For more information call Kim Willie. Practice begins April 1st off the bus at the church.

Mendon City Council Meeting— Mayor Earl Doolittle announced the drawing for May Day queen. Steve Hatch read the names of the girls in the drawing. The Mayor drew the name of Alison Clemensen as our May Day queen this year. Steve Hatch reported that Paul Murray will be our May Day Chairman this year. Nola Murray will put together a newsletter to be mailed out with the water bills.
Ward Bulletin Announcement: The queen’s court practice song will be at 4:10 p.m. in the Relief Society room instead of noon.
Mendon May Day Activities Set— Mendon will hold its traditional May Day celebration on Friday and Saturday. A dance will be held at 8:30 p.m. Friday in the Mendon LDS Ward, 20 North. 100 West, with music furnished by Guy Bartholomew. The floor show, provided by a group of Utah State University international students, will begin at 10:00 p.m. Cost will be $1.00 per person or $5.00 a family Refreshments will be served. Crowning of the May Day queen, Alison Clemensen, sixteen, daughter of Kim and Mercedes Clemensen of Mendon, will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday on the town square. The other members of the court are the high school juniors living in Mendon. The braiding of the maypole by sixty grade-school-aged girls will follow the crowning. A program will then be held in the LDS Church. The Mendon Arts Council will sponsor a bake sale that afternoon in the Mendon school building. Other afternoon activities include soccer and baseball games; family games and horse rides for children, ages two to five. Food will be available at the food stand on Saturday beginning at noon until 7:30 p.m. May Day celebrations were a common spring celebration in most communities during the early settlement of Cache Valley. Mendon was settled in 1859 and the May Day celebration has been continuous since 1864.

The May Day dance will be Friday at 8:30 p.m. The floor show will be at 10:00 p.m. Admission is one dollar per person, or five dollars per family. Guy Bartholomew is providing the music. Saturday’s activities will begin with the crowning of the May queen and the maypole dance at 10:00 a.m. The May Day program will be held immediately after at the church. There will be afternoon activities and the food stand will be open. We hope you will take part in the activities. The Mendon Arts Council— Will have copies of the long awaited book, “History of Mendon,” available for sale during the forthcoming May Day celebration, next Saturday May 4th. The cost of this beautiful volume of over 500 pages, will be twenty-five dollars, tax included.

Rally ‘Round The Maypole, Ancient Rite Weaves Spring Magic In Mendon— Mendon’s annual May Day celebration proved to be a success with a large turnout as sixty young women from Mendon danced around the maypole, a tradition originating in medieval England. The May Day celebration committee crowned Alison Clemensen as its 1991 queen and Stock Longhurst as consort. Twelve maids of honor were chosen along with escorts. Max and Carolyn Baker of Mendon introduced the queen’s court during the May Day program at the Mendon chapel. Other items on the program agenda were May Day songs, a piano solo and a reading by Robert Campbell. Cache Valley residents participated in a variety of activities at Mendon’s City Square Saturday, featuring a turkey shoot, horseshoes, pony rides, water fights, softball games and even haircuts.
