Mendon Adds 1960 May Festival To Town History— The sun shone down on the circle of friends gathered on Mendon square Saturday morning for the annual May Day observance. And it was warm enough for little girls in fluffy pastel dresses to discard their coats. This annual homecoming saw many sons and daughters back in town to relive the festivities they once took part in: the procession of the queen and her court, the winding of the maypole. Queen Bonnie Peterson was crowned by her Consort Vaughan Peterson. Her little brother Richard was crown bearer and Marsha Rae Leishman was flower girl. Attendants were Bonnie Kidman and Michael Bowen, Gayle Hiibner and Nolan Bird. Zeno Andersen and T. Kay Sorensen were in charge of the morning’s events and let the singing of traditional songs “Straying and Maying” and “Come to the Woodland.” Mothers of twenty-six little girls had been busy sewing the full-skirted pink and blue dresses in which they danced the maypole. Mozelle Sorensen who has accompanied the dancing for thirty years or more, was again at the piano. A program followed in the ward chapel. In the afternoon the Skyline Riding Club gave a demonstration at the club grounds at one o’clock. The children’s dance began at 2:00 p.m. and was followed at 3:00 p.m. with games and races. A ball game at 3:30 p.m. completed activities until the annual May Day dance at 9:00 p.m. in the evening. The grand old mountains above the town were at their mid-spring best as Mendon launched its second hundred years of May Days, excited little May Queens and maypole dancing. For the past 100 years the community of Mendon has greeted spring with the crowning of a May Queen and dancing on the grass of the town square.
