Mendon May Day— 1944
Mendon News— Mendon Sunday school officers and teachers are planning on a big May Day celebration for Saturday, May 20th. The maypole dance will begin at 10:00 a.m. followed by the crowning of the Queen, Bonnie Shelton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Verl Shelton. The program follows: Afternoon consists of children’s dance, ball game, races and sports. A big dance will be held in the evening. Committees in charge are Reeves Bird, T. Kay Sorensen, Durrell Hughes, Ada Walker, and Hazel Copen. In charge of the maypole dance is Mozelle Sorensen, Anna Hughes and Joyce Hiibner.
May Day Fete At Mendon Saturday— Traditional Mendon May Day celebration will be held Saturday, under the sponsorship of the Sunday school organization in the ward, it was announced today. Reeves Bird, superintendent, today announced events as follows: Crowning of the queen and maypole dance at 10:00 a.m.; program in the chapel to follow the coronation; children’s dance and adults’ sports in the afternoon, concluded by a baseball game between married and single men. May Queen is Bonnie Shelton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Verl Shelton, while Archbishop is Gilbert Wood, [son of Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo K. Wood]. About twenty girls will participate in the maypole dance. A public dance in the recreation hall Saturday evening will conclude festivities.
Mendon May Day Festival Saturday— All preparations were completed today for the annual Mendon May Day celebration, which will be held Saturday, beginning at 10:00 a.m. with queen coronation ceremonies. Title of the Queen has been bestowed upon Bonnie Shelton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Verl Shelton. Archbishop is Gilbert Wood, [son of Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo K. Wood]. There will be a maypole dance with twenty girls participating. Following the coronation, there will be a program in the chapel, a children’s dance and sports for everyone in the afternoon, a baseball game between married men and single men, with a dance in the evening concluding the celebration.
